Assemblies of God, Wycliffe Resolve Bible Dispute

Bible(CBN News) The Assemblies of God will continue working with Wycliffe Bible Translators after threatening to withdraw its support over previous Bible translations.

In 2011, Wycliffe faced criticism over translations that replaced the phrase “Son of God” with “Christ.”

The ministry and it’s sister organization, the Summer Institute of Linguistics, had made the change to avoid confusion for Muslim readers.

The AG said removing the phrase “Son of God” goes too far and threatened a boycott.

The parties asked the World Evangelical Alliance to step in and help resolve the dispute.

A board of experts issued a list of 10 recommendations that Wycliffe and SIL have agreed to implement.

“We greatly appreciate the WEA subcommittee and its chairman, Dr. Robert Cooley, for their many hours of diligent work in reviewing this important issue,” Executive Director Greg Mundis said on behalf of the AG World Missions Executive Committee.

“We are thankful that a resolution to this process has been reached and that AG World Missions can continue its longstanding working relationship with Wycliffe Bible Translators, as so many millions wait for the Word of God in their languages,” he said.
