His Holiness Abune Birhaneyesus Surafel

(ETHIOPIA GOVERNMENT) Ethiopia’s religious leaders urged Ethiopians to uphold peace and support the country’s efforts in national development in their New Year messages for 2006 (Ethiopian Calendar), noting that upholding the ongoing peace and national development endeavors in the upcoming new Ethiopian year should be the concern of all.

They called on Ethiopians to respect and support each other, strengthen their unity within diversity, and together push the ongoing national development endeavors forward. The Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church, his Holiness Abune Mathias urged people to continue working hard in the New Year to maintain peace and bring prosperity. The President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, Sheikh Kiar Mohammed Aman, said the New Year should be a time during which all Ethiopians work together as one regardless of religious differences to sustain the ongoing economic growth and national development.

The Archbishop of the Ethiopian Catholic Church, Abune Birhaneyesus Surafel, called on the laity to contribute to fighting illicit human trafficking. The President of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekaneyesus, the Reverend Dr. Wakseyoum Edossa, urged the members of the church to look the needy while celebrating the turn of the New Year, while the Secretary General of the Evangelical Churches Fellowship of Ethiopia, Rev.Alemu-Sheta, urged the laity to support ongoing maternal and child healthcare efforts in the country.,
