Several groups fighting against mandates in Obamacare have won a temporary court victory in Pennsylvania.
President Barack Obama’s health care law requires employers to provide birth control coverage to their employees, including drugs such as the morning-after pill that may cause abortions.
Now a federal judge granted a temporary reprieve to Catholic groups in Pittsburgh and Erie, Pa., so they don’t have to comply with the mandate while their cases are appealed to higher courts.
U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab said forcing these groups to comply with the birth control mandate by Jan. 1 would cause a “substantial burden on their free exercise of religion.”
Dozens of Christian and Catholic groups and businesses argue the contraception mandate violates their religious freedom.
There are so many cases and contradictory rulings in the lower courts that some believe the cases will have to be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
