Cape Town – A former Methodist minister will approach a court to fight her dismissal from the church because of her sexual orientation, the Cape Times reported on Monday.

Ecclesia de Lange, 43, announced her intention to marry her same-sex partner to the Methodist Church of Southern Africa in December 2009, the newspaper reported.

In 2010, it charged her with breaching its laws, and dismissed her after her appeal was rejected.

The church had ordained her as a minister in August 2006, and she had worked with congregations in Brackenfell and Windsor Park.

De Lange told the newspaper the church had “no policy on homosexual relations”.

Although it had been formulating policy on homosexual marriages for years, it had not reached a conclusion, and she had therefore not broken any rules.

The case would be heard in the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday, when De Lange would ask that the internal church disciplinary finding be set aside, and that she be reinstated as a minister.
