Kenya: I Am Not a Preacher – Kidum

Kenyan-based Burundian singer Kidum has told off his critics concerning his juggling between gospel and secular music.

The Mapenzi hitmaker said he is not pursuing the gospel music path for the sake of making money, but as a “calling” to spread the gospel, not as a preacher but as an artiste.

He says salvation is not just about singing about “going to heaven or filling all your lyrics with the name Jesus”, but also through giving the masses information that is benefitial to them.

He said: “First of all, I am not a preacher, neither am I a religion teacher. I am just an artiste who is following up on his calling by God. Gospel is not just what many people assume it to be. It’s said artistes are the mirror of the society and all I am doing is educating the society on the things that affect them the most. When Daddy Owen sang Mbona, he was talking about the ill-treatment the disabled members of the society get from all around… The society needs to be educated about diseases, love, peace, tribalism and politics among many other issues affecting them. This is all I am doing.”

Besides being part of the ongoing Niko Na Safaricom Live concerts, Kidum is currently working on releasing a collaboration with former TPF winner Alpha Rwirangira and a new video that features comedian Erick Omondi as a pastor.

“My song with Nikki (Sheila Mwanyigha) titled Hali Na Mali is already out and I will soon head to the USA to make the final touches for my collabo track with Alpha.”
