Nigeria: Armed Men Storm Church, Shoot Man, 70

Daily Trust, Abeokuta — Ten armed men yesterday stormed the St. John Anglican Church, Oke-Sopen, Ijebu Igbo in Ogun State in two vehicles and shot a 70 year old man in the head.

Witnesses said the congregation was listening to the pastor’s sermon when the gunmen stormed the church and went straight for the man. The church service abruptly came to an end as the congregation deserted the church, except a few who stood with the pastor.

“We were shocked and everybody was jittery as the service abruptly came to the end. Some people, especially, the elderly people are still in shock. No one can say anything about the man’s killing, he was not a politician, if he was, we would have been thinking that his political opponents carried out the act, but as it is now, the church has been deserted”, a witness said.

The remains of the man who is survived by six wives and over 20 children was deposited at the mortuary of the General hospital in Ijebu-Igbo. Ogun State Police Command Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said it was too early to link the incident with politics.
