Nigeria: Corruption Is Ruining Nigeria – Rev Kalu

Rev Marvellous Kalu is the minister in charge of the Presbyterian Church, Nyanya Parish. In this interview granted CHIKA OTUCHIKERE, during the church’s celebration of this year’s Fathers’ Day, Kalu urged Nigerians to rise up against corruption and called for the empowerment of the EFCC and ICPC.

How will you describe the Fathers’ Day celebration?

The fundamental thing about this ceremony is to recognise the fact that fathers are the pillars of society. The Lord created men and biblically, we understand that the first man created was Adam and God built the structure upon which society is established. A man is the head of the family; a man drives the vision of the family. The father is the one that determines and defines the entire concept that rule the family and by reason of that, the man becomes significantly important even in the larger society. Because if a father is able to build a stable home, one that is structured and anchored on the fear of God then we are sure of having a society that is God-fearing, that will metamorphose into corruption-free society. Society where there is equity, where there is justice, where there is fair play. So, a father is at the centre of the whole thing. So fatherhood as we have understood at this point in time means a lot. Apart from biological father at the family level, there is also fatherhood spiritually. A man is called upon to be a father to a lot of people, you know spiritually. So by reason of that, you are to father someone in church, by way of faith, by way of inculcation of the value of life and the value of faith. In modern language we call it role-model. That is where the whole thing started. So you must have to assume that position as a father at all times and that is the centre of the whole thing. The origin of fatherhood and its celebration is to ensure that we appreciate what the Lord has created. Fatherhood is a gift from God and as we participate in this celebration we are celebrating what God has done to mankind. We are all products of fathers

There is saying that it is a man’s world. How would you rate the fathers?

Really from creation, man was created first. But since we are trying to be gender sensitive, I cannot say the world is entirely man’s but the man is the one that dictates the pace, the man occupies the most significant position as far as everything about the world is concern. The man takes the lead. Every other creature queues behind man. The man is the apex creature of God let me put it that way but for reason and purposes of carrying others along, we cannot say it is fully a man’s world because we have other creatures outside man more so we have the female sex.

What is your take on gay marriages even in the church?

There is no true church of God that will acknowledge that animal practice that’s the way I will put it. It is unhuman. By creation the Bible says that the Lord God created them male and female. And for this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined together with his wife. And that wife is the female, the other sex, it’s not man. The Bible did not say a man shall leave his father and his mother and move to another man’s house and be joined together with another man as wife. No, no, no, no, it’s wrong. I think this is what I will consider as satanic wave and we should reject it in this part of the world. It’s quite unchristian, its unbiblical, it’s uncultured its untraditional for us in this part of the world, in fact for humanity. Nobody would allude human rights to that kind of thing, because that is not the right of humans. In fact even animals don’t have right to practice that type of thing. So for people to say its violation, it’s not a violation of human rights, but we are trying to speak about what is not human in the first place. So what is not human can never be a right to human beings.

Could it be one of the signs of the end of time?

Absolutely, yes it is. It is certainly a sign of the end time. The Bible says in the later days people shall come with many teachings, people shall come up with a lot of things that have never been heard and these things are generated from the kingdom of darkness. It is one of the tricks of the enemy to woe people out of the Kingdom of God into his own kingdom and unfortunately people are falling prey to the enemy. So it is not God’s principle it is not God’s will. It is just something the devil has manufactured from his own world in order to destroy the faith of people and to get them away from being hairs to the kingdom of God and to becoming hairs for hell and eternal condemnation.

What is your take on the security issues in the country currently?

I think it is human. It’s human for these things to come up. It is human because we leave in the flesh. What we pray is that it should not get to the point of destroying our values completely. And I commend government for what they are doing. I am not saying that it is good for any group of people to rise up any day and take up arms to destroy lives. What I’m saying is that it’s one of the instincts. That’s what makes us the human beings that we are, the imperfect people. But our ability to reason along the line of God’s principle and tackle the issue headlong is what makes us the godly people that God has called us to be. So I commend the president for his efforts towards this. All the measures taken by the president, I consider as proactive measures towards curbing the insurgencies and I commend him for that. Other ones like political issues, we have them in the country. Other gimmicks that people play just to oust one person or the other from office, I term as political. When they come up the ability of the people in government to march along with that in love and ensure that nobody is trampled upon is what makes a good leader. Yes the government should be able to withstand constructive opposition, in fact even destructive opposition, opposition that are destructive but presented in a constructive manner and that is what makes them more matured that the opposition. So government should not react to opposition as if those opposition are their enemies, they should react to them in love. That is one good aspect of Mr. President. His disposition and his carriage; not given to erratic actions, not given to quick actions that are quite emotional, is what makes me as a person to appreciate him. People may say he is slow but he is not sluggish in anyway. I appreciate that.

How can we end corruption in our country?

Corruption is the bane of this society. If there is anything government should do it’s to make sure that corruption is killed at its roots because it has really brought about a lot of problems in the society. It is trying to run down Nigeria completely. Nobody is trusted anymore, we can travel out freely, I mean, we are becoming enslaved, we are becoming in bondage to corruption. We are becoming slaves to corruption and the Bible says we should not be slaves to sin we should have dominion over sin. I mean we should rise up and have dominion over corruption, let us rise up and subdue it. So government should make sure that the agencies instituted like the EFCC, the ICPC do their work not in a corrupt way too, they should do their work with a clear conscience. They were brought there to ensure that corruption is killed and not to be corrupted themselves.
