Zimbabwe: Churches March for Peace

peace-sign-coloring-in-pages-7.gifBy Prosper Dembedza (THE HERALD) WORSHIPPERS from different churches yesterday held a peace awareness campaign in Mhondoro ahead of the country’s watershed harmonised elections this year. The event, one of the biggest in a rural area, saw hundreds of worshippers marching from Watyoka Clinic to Muzavazi Primary School calling for a peaceful environment in their community.

Methodist Development and Relief Agency(MeDRA) organised the peace campaign.

Among the churches that took part in the campaign were Roman Catholic, Zaoga, Shoko raJehovha, Johanne Masowe Chishanu, Seventh Day Adventist, Salvation Army and Vatumwa vaJehovha.

Addressing the congregants, MeDRA executive director Mr Clever Tabaziba urged people to put their political differences aside and unite to ensure a peaceful environment in the forthcoming elections.

“Peace can only be achieved when people are united, when there is no unity there is no peace and no development in our country,” he said.

“Let us all unite as one people sharing the same objective of shunning violence in the forthcoming harmonised elections.”

Mr Tabaziba said MeDRA has organised projects for peace in the district, a move aimed at uniting people from different political parties.

“We have so far organised peace projects, one of them is gardening whereby groups of people are provided with some funds to buy seeds and fertilisers to cultivate perishables to sell.

“This development is uniting people from different political parties hence promoting peace in this community,” he said.

Speaking at the same occasion Zanu-PF councilor for Ward 27 Cde Margaret Mhlauri said peace played a very important role in the development of a country.

“A country which is at peace develops faster than the one at war. Peace is very important for the development of our country, let’s all unite and shun violence,” she said.
