Beninoise Singer Angelique Kidjo Wins Third Grammy Award

The elegant singer and proud ambassador of Africa made us proud by winning the Int’l Music award category, against the Ladysmith black Mambazo and other talented artistes from other continents at the Grammy last week. It was indeed her third Grammy.

American rapper, Kendrick Lamar shone on the night with the biggest number of nominations, eleven but managed to get only five of them. Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars, and Meghan Trainor won the top awards of Album of the year, Song of the year, Record of the year and Best New Artiste, respectively.

The Beninese singer, Angelique Kidjo who is casted for a lead role in the movie ‘CEO’, dedicated the award to every traditional artiste and young generation in Africa.

“Africa is on the rise, Africa is positive, Africa is joyful. There is a lot of music on the continent that the world must bring themselves to discover”, says the award winning singer.

Touching on the issue of race, the singer said people can use music to promote harmony and unity. “Let’s get together and be one with music, and say no to hate and violence,” says Angelique Kidjo.

The song which fetched her the Grammy, ‘Sings’ merges African rhythms with European classical instrumentation, a fusion on which Kidjo has always experimented.
