Egypt: Pope Asks Constitution Amendments to Include All Non-Muslims

Coptic Christian Pope Tawadros II has demanded the amendment of Article Three of Egypt’s constitution from being restricted to “Jews and Christians” to include all non-Muslims, reported a local newspaper on Thursday.

The said article stipulated that the main sources for regulating the personal status and religious affairs of Egyptian Christians and Jews are the principles of their religious law.

Tawadros asked for the consideration of non-Muslim citizens during a Wednesday meeting with Amr Moussa, head of the the 50-member constituent assembly entrusted with amending the 2012 suspended constitution, at the Abbasiya Cathedral, according to Al Masry Al Youm newspaper.

On his part, Moussa affirmed that the amended constitution would be “100 percent civil and radically different from the suspended one.”
