Gay Couple Sues to Wed in Church of England

(CBN) A famous British couple is suing the Church of England so they can get married there.

The United Kingdom’s new same-sex marriage law forbids the Church of England from performing same-sex weddings, and it says churches don’t have to do them if they don’t want to.

But Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, 42, and his partner, Tony, 49, said they want to get married in their church, the Church of England, and the only way to make that happen is by a lawsuit.

The Coalition for Marriage, which led opposition to the law, indicated they’re dismayed by the lawsuit — but not surprised.

“The ink’s not even dry on the bill and churches are already facing litigation,” the Religious News Service quoted Coalition for Marriage Director Colin Hart. “We warned Mr. Cameron (Britain’s prime minister) this would happen. We told him he was making promises that he couldn’t possibly keep. He didn’t listen.”

“Mr. Cameron’s chickens are coming home to roost,” he continued. “And it will be ordinary people with a religious belief who yet again fall victim to the totalitarian forces of political correctness.”
