Liberia: Mary Broh Apologizes

New Democrat (Monrovia) – Mary T. Broh, the Director General of the General Services Agency (GSA) has apologized to the Liberian Council of Churches (LCC) for questioning their role in sustaining the country’s peace.

“I am here today to apologize to the Liberian Council of Churches for the statement that I made against them,” she said.

During a recent peace meeting at the City Hall, Madam Broh launched a barrage of criticism against the churches saying that they have failed to play their role in sustaining the country’s peace.

She also revealed that unlike in the past when the churches played parental role in the decision making process of Liberia, today, they have reneged on their function as champions of peace.

She was speaking in reaction to calls by some critics of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf that she should resign. Hours after her comment against the Churches, the leadership of the LCC reacted to her stating that her statement was misdirected.

But addressing journalists at her U.N. Drive office Monday, Madam Broh summersaulted begging the churches for mercy.

She noted that her comments were not intended to undermine the integrity of the church in the country.

“That was not my intension. And so, at this particular time, I would like to apologize for my remarks. “I would like to say to the leadership of the LCC that my statement wasn’t meant to harm any relationship with the community. The Church is the Church and the church has its role to play. So therefore, I do apologize for that remark,” she stressed.
