Tanzania Daily News (Dar es Salaam) THE Religious Leaders’ Council for Combating Drug Abuse in Tanzania has congratulated the Minister for Transport, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, for his patriotism, courage and compassion for this nation through intensifying fight against drugs trafficking and use.

According to the council, Dr Mwakyembe is a role model of all the leaders in the country and they asked religious leaders of all faiths to pray for him and police should intensify protection for him.

Other stakeholders and organizations should join hands in eradicating drug trafficking because Dr Mwakyembe cannot succeed without being complemented.

The chairperson of the council who is also the Chief Sheikh of Dar es Salaam Region, Sheikh Alhad Mussa, said that the step taken to restore the dignity of Mwalimu J.K Nyerere International Airport is important and will help return respect to the country.

“We don’t agree with the use of the Mwalimu Nyerere International Airport as a gateway for drugs,” he said. He added that the council also congratulates the Drug Control Commission and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for various strategies that saw the capture and curbing of use and inflow of drugs into the country.

The Religious Leaders Council for Combating Drug Abuse in Tanzania was launched on 11 October, 2011, with the aim to provide spiritual guidance to drug users who are recovering (Recovery Oriented System of Care) and provide education to prevent youth from using drugs.

The council was formed by 14 members, seven from Christian institutions and seven from Islamic institutions comprising sheikhs, bishops and other religious leaders.
