(THE NEW VISTION) President Yoweri Museveni has urged the Church to engage in an aggressive preventive healthcare campaign through educating people on the importance of basic hygiene, proper sanitation and good feeding.

Museveni said it was everyone’s duty, including religious leaders, to continue the campaign against HIV/AIDS which has killed thousands of Ugandans.

“The Church is encouraged not to get tired of openly campaigning against the AIDS scourge whose spread is to a great extent, a morality problem,” Museveni said.

The President’s speech was read by Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, the Vice-President, who represented Museveni at the centenary celebrations of Katigondo Major Seminary in Kalungu district on Saturday.

Museveni hailed the Church for contributing to national development through health, education, agriculture and other sectors. Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, the Kabaka of Buganda, who attended as a special guest, asked religious leaders to help in fighting drug abuse.

He said since the public listens to religious leaders more, they should commit more time to preaching against the vice. Mutebi warned the youth against the western world influence. He wondered why coffee and cotton were no longer important crops.

“Uganda’s major cash crops were coffee and cotton. Where are they today? What income-generating activities have replaced them?” the Kabaka asked.
