Angola: Methodist Church Contribution to Independence Highlighted

The Methodist Church played an active role in the clandestine and armed national liberation struggle by awakening the spirit of Angolan nationalists, said Tuesday the church?s Reverend, Adilson de Almeida.

The church authority who was speaking to Angop mentioned Amilcar Cabral and other political leaders as having begun in Methodist Church from where they moved to different African countries and found a greater force for unity.

At that time, the church was involved in clandestine work to enable the country’s independence to become a clear fact.

The faithful in Methodist church had a different view on the people’s freedom, under American influence who trained them for a more freed consciousness on independence.

According to the Rev. the first president of Angola, Agostinho Neto, was a son of the first native pastor of the church, the Rev. Agostinho Pedro Neto, who was attached to the religious institution.
