New York Daily News – Brooklyn district attorney hopeful Ama Dwimoh voiced her support Friday for the oft-rejected state legislation to protect child sex abuse victims.
Dwimoh, the former head of the DA’s Crimes Against Children Bureau, stood with survivors of sexual assaults in challenging state legislators to support the Child Victims Act.
“Every day that we do not pass the CVA is a day that justice is denied to the brave men and women who confront their abusers,” said Dwimoh. “New York should be a place where there is truly justice for all — regardless of age or circumstance.”
Acting District Attorney Eric Gonzalez also backs the bill, and fellow candidate Mark Fliedner said he does as well. Neither was at the rally. The three are seeking to fill the seat left vacant by the sudden death of district attorney Kenneth Thompson.
The CVA was first proposed in 2006, but has yet to pass despite efforts by the Daily News, politicians, abuse survivors and activists.
The law would scrap current law requiring victims to seek civil or criminal charges before the age of 23.
“How much longer will it be before children who are victims of sexual abuse have rights?” asked survivor Ana Wagner.
