Having strong well defined family values helps solidify the foundation for a strong relationship. When cultivated long enough this closeness provides a soft place to fall when life doesn’t go according to plan. Strong and consistent family values are important in building trust and confidence in each family.
A family value can add both negatively as well as positively to a society. If the family values are oppressive, driven by self-centeredness and disregard for others, they will add to the unrest in the society as a whole because those who experience conduct based on such values will feel subdued, and thus chaos may follow.
How do we strike a balance between the traditional values that they learned from Africa to that of the western world? However, we often get caught up in work and other activities and give our families less attention. Often times we work hard because we are invested in our career goals, material things and financial rewards. Yet without a balanced life of incorporating play and having loving relationships, our lives become stressful, overwhelming and unsatisfying.
