Ghana: Holy Spirit Cathedral climaxes 60th milestone

The Holy Spirit Cathedral has climaxed its 60th anniversary celebration with a call on Christians to utilise their God-given gifts for the benefit of the church and nation at large.

Delivering the homily, the Metropolitan Catholic Archbishop of Accra,Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, said Christians must use their gift for the common good of the country.

According to him, individuals had gifts such as singing, hospitality and counselling and must make use of the gift to improve the conditions of the country.

“The Holy Spirit has endowed us with gifts and we must use the gifts to change the pains of our dear country,” he said.

Utilise gifts

Most Rev. Palmer-Buckle, who said this at the thanksgiving service to climax the anniversary at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra yesterday, said “When we employ the gifts, it would bring unity and prosperity to us as Christians and Ghanaians,” adding that the country would be a better place than it was now.

“There are variety of gifts,” he said, which we could employ to spread the Gospel to the world to win souls into the kingdom of God.

Anniversary

The year-long celebration, which was on the theme: “Remembering and respecting the past and looking forward to the future”, was launched on June 8,2014.

A series of events were held to mark the anniversary celebrations. The parish held a crusade, health walk, revival, lectures and retreat to commemorate the anniversary.

Yesterday’s event was also observed as a Pentecost Sunday to ponder over the gifts the Holy Spirit had endowed Christians. Fifty-eight individuals were also confirmed into the Catholic family.

Background

The Holy Spirit Cathedral came into existence out of a series of interwoven events that led to the development of the Catholic faith in Ghana. It is the seat of the Archbishop.

Construction of the Holy Spirit Cathedral began in 1951 by Bishop Adolf Noser and was completed in 1957 by Bishop Oliver Bowers.

Catholics from all walks of life contributed to some of the furnishings of the Holy Spirit Cathedral.

It has since been an important venue for Catholic national events. On March 6, 1957, a thanksgiving mass was held at the Cathedral to mark the independence day of Ghana.
