Kwakwaduam New York Celebrates Mother’s Day

The Kwakwaduam Association Inc. of New York celebrated the Mother’s Day in New York over the mother’s day weekend. The occasion was to celebrate mothers, mothers to be and women in general.

Value was added to the celebration with Dr. Kafui Demasio, a Lecturer and Assistant Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Albert Einstein Medical School New York, giving a lecture on the Preventive Health Care and Screening Guidelines for Women.

She suggested the good health was state of a social, physical and mental wellbeing and not only the absence of disease. She stressed the importance of screening and gave an age stratified guidelines for screening and more importantly stressed the need for preventive maintenance of health.

Some on the important areas she stressed include screening guidelines for diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, bone densitometry, mammogram, Pap smears, STIs among others. She also stressed weight reduction as part of health maintenance and explained the use of the BMI table. She advised the mothers to ensure that their teenage girls who were sexually active to get gynecologic exams and to get the appropriate screening particularly for STIs and indicated need for the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.

Commenting on the program, Mr. Mark Saforo, President of the Kwakwaduam Association Inc, indicated that there was a need for health education and despite the festive mood of the occasion, the lecture by Dr. Demasio fulfilled the mission of the Organization. Dr. Kwame Aniapam Boafo, consultant to the Organization said that he was impressed by the quality of the lecture by Dr. Demasio who is his Colleague at the Medical School

Through partnership with the World Vision, gift items were distributed to the mothers and to some of the wives of the male members.

The program was brought to the finale with Prince Nico Mbarga’s legenadary song Sweet Mother playing in the background
