Kenya: Rift Valley Religious Leaders Decry Hate Speech On Social Media

social-mediaBy Mathews Ndanyi and Jackie Bore Rift Valley church leaders want the government to act on people spreading hate via social media. Eldoret ACK Bishop Christopher Ruto and his Catholic counterpart Cornelius Korir said they had noted with concern the increase in cases of Kenyans using social media to abuse each other and spread ethnic hatred.

They were speaking during an interfaith meeting in Eldoret at the weekend that also included Muslim religious leaders. The clerics called on government to curtail the trend and act decisively on those involved.

“We have to build a cohesive country and those who have continued to use social media as a tool to spread hate must stop immediately,” Korir said.

Chairman of the Imams in North Rift Abubakar Dini said they would step up efforts to heal Kenyans especially in areas affected by the 2007/08 poll violence.

He said the Cord Coalition should pursue the court process while preaching peace among Kenyans and that the Supreme Court should be able to determine the dispute without fear or favour.

His sentiments were echoed by Korir who said those who were dissatisfied with the election results have the right to pursue justice in the courts in order to clear doubts over the polls. “Let them do what they need to do but do it while ensuring that Kenyans remain peaceful at all times,” he said.
